Hey there, friends in Christ! I’m so delighted to have you join me in my virtual living room, where we celebrate the beauty of homemaking through a lens of faith, love, and hospitality. Today, I’d love to share some of my favorite ways to make our homes feel warm and welcoming, filled with God’s love and grace.
As a Christian homemaker, I try to live out Proverbs 31:27, “She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” Our homes are not just places to live; they’re sanctuaries for our families, spaces of blessing, and a warm welcome to anyone God brings our way. As the seasons change and with Thanksgiving just around the corner, let’s look at ways to make our homes cozy and filled with His presence.
1. Choose a Warm, Earthy Color Palette
God’s creation is a rich palette of colors, each season bringing its own unique beauty. Consider bringing in tones like burnt orange, deep reds, forest greens, and creamy neutrals to echo the warmth of autumn or a sunrise. These colors evoke feelings of comfort and timelessness, grounding our homes in natural beauty that feels sacred and stable.
Tip: You don’t have to paint the walls! Try small changes like adding a rust-colored throw, deep red cushions, or earthy-toned curtains. Even fresh flowers in a similar palette can bring in warmth and seasonal beauty.
2. Bring Nature Indoors
God’s creation has a unique way of bringing peace to our homes. Fresh flowers, potted plants, or even a bowl of pinecones on the table can bring a touch of the outdoors inside. Living plants are reminders of God’s creation, provision and care, and fill our home with beauty like when Jesus speaks of the lilies of the field in Matthew 6:28-30.
Tip: For low-maintenance greenery, try easy-care plants like pothos or snake plants. If fresh flowers aren’t available, dried arrangements in earthy tones can add beauty without requiring much upkeep.
3. Use Gentle, Ambient Lighting
Lighting can completely change the feel of a room. Swap out bright overhead lights and create a warm glow with candles and soft lamps, string lights, and candles letting your home reflect His love and light. Jesus tells us, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14), and by creating a warm glow, we’re inviting His presence into our space. I especially love candles with soft, soothing, natural scents like lavender or vanilla, which bring a sense of calm and help remind me of God’s peace "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:7).
Tip: Flameless candles are a safe, budget-friendly option that still bring that same warm glow. Try adding them to lanterns or glass vases for a soft, diffused light.
4. Create a Welcoming Aroma with Simple Scents
There’s something so comforting about a home that smells warm and inviting. The smell of freshly baked treats, simmering cinnamon on the stove, or essential oils can create an atmosphere that feels welcoming to family and friends alike creating a space that feels loving and kind. Deuteronomy 32:2 says, “May my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, like gentle rain upon the tender grass, and like showers upon the herb.” Just as scents linger in the air, may our homes be filled with the gentle reminders of God’s love.
Tip: Try making a stovetop simmer with water, cinnamon sticks, orange peels, and cloves. This is a quick, natural way to create a cozy scent that fills your home.
5. Simplify to Highlight Beauty
Our culture often values excess, but a simpler approach to decor and home life can create a more peaceful, welcoming space. Decluttering and keeping things simple can help you create a home that feels restful and inviting. Ecclesiastes 3:6 reminds us, “a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away” Simplifying can refresh both space and your spirit, helping you focus on what truly matters.
Tip: Start by clearing one surface or shelf at a time. Donate or pass along items you no longer use, and make room for peace and simplicity.
6. Enjoy Creating with DIY Projects
Crafting personal touches and making your own home decor pieces can be incredibly fulfilling and personal. Consider small projects like crafting a seasonal wreath or painting a sign with your favorite verse. Ephesians 2:10 tells us "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." When we create, we’re reflecting His creativity and love.
Tip: DIY projects don’t have to be complicated. Look for ideas that use materials you already have, and remember that the process is just as meaningful as the finished product.
7. Layer Up for Comfort and Warmth
When it comes to creating a cozy atmosphere, texture is your best friend. Pile up soft, inviting layers with throw blankets, quilts, and a variety of pillows to add depth and warmth to any room. Try different fabrics like plush fleece, chunky knit, and even faux fur. For family movie nights or evening devotions, these soft textures make the perfect backdrop for togetherness. As we wrap ourselves in blankets, let’s remember that we are wrapped in God’s love, as 1 John 4:19 reminds us: “We love because he first loved us.”
Tip: Change out your throws and pillow covers seasonally to keep things fresh without spending a lot. Think warm flannels and knits for winter, lighter fabrics for spring, and fresh cottons for summer.
8. Make a Reading or Reflection Nook
Consider carving out a small nook for reading or quiet reflection—a little sanctuary within your home. Include a comfy chair, a side table for your Bible or journal, and maybe a cozy blanket. This spot can become your own little sanctuary for quiet time with God’s word, like when "Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching." (Luke 10:39), where you can connect with God, rest, and recharge. Like Mary, we can find stillness and peace in His presence, even amid our busy lives.
Tip: Add a small basket with books, devotionals, and a journal to make this space inviting and functional. Keep it simple and clutter-free to create a true place of rest.
9. Display Family Photos and Milestones
Showcase the beautiful memories God has blessed you with by putting up family photos, keepsakes, and milestones. A wall filled with memories serves as a visual testament to the blessings in our lives, echoing Joshua 24:15: “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Seeing these moments daily can remind you of the love and faith in your home and of God’s faithfulness to our family.
Tip: Consider arranging a gallery wall with different-sized frames for a unique, personal look. Include scripture prints or quotes that inspire your family and reflect your values.
10. Cultivate Spaces for Family Time
Create special spaces for family activities, like a cozy area for board games or a spot to enjoy movies together. Setting aside these areas strengthens bonds and brings moments of joy, laughter, and togetherness that reflect the joy of the Lord (Nehemiah 8:10).
Tip: Add a small basket for games, a blanket fort corner for little ones, or a collection of family-favorite DVDs. A small gesture like this can make family time more inviting and easy to start.
